Helsingør Pigegarde

Since 1958, Helsingør Pigegarde (Elsinore Marching Show Band) has been a scheduled parade feature in the streets of Elsinore, every Friday throughout the summer. Over the years the girls have played all over the world.

They are lined up in the yard by the toll chamber in fine, straight lines dressed in the traditional garb: White boots, white skirt, blue jacket topped with the white and blue hat with the red pom pon. The audience’s gazes are fixed on the girls. Some of the girls giggle in the silence, searching for a place to rest their gaze. Then the awaited ”Turn left, march!” sounds. And off they go.
Drums and flutes set things in motion. Then comes the brass. Helsingør Pigegarde marches off again.

In Stengade people step aside dutifully, when the marching band march past. Some take pictures. Others just smile. And the small children look on with big eyes. For it is both fascinating, and perhaps a bit scary, with all the nicely dressed girls and all their instruments.

No summer in Elsinore is complete without the marching show band’s Friday parade. It has been that way since 1958, and probably will be for some time to come. For Helsingør Pigegarde is something of an institution in the town. A rare combination of youth and the joy of music, dressed in tradition, nostalgia and recognition.

Around the world with success
Helsingør Pigegarde is not satisfied just playing in Elsinore: They have played numerous places around the world. They have played at the opening of the Carlsberg brewery on Cypress in 1984, at the Olympic games in Los Angeles in 1984, and at the football world cup in France in 1998.

They have also won several prizes and awards. Most lately at the world championships in Calgary in 2012, where the marching band won second place and the drum major won first.

The royal house and Helsingør Pigegarde

The first time Helsingør Pigegarde was afilliated with the danish royal house was in 1967, when the marching band played at Queen Magrethe and Prince Henrik’s wedding. Pigegarden also plays every year when the queen arrives at Elsinore on her ship, the Dannebrog.
