Grand hotel dreams
When a number of houses worth preserving were demolished on Havnegade after a fire in 1938, the people behind the joint-stock company Hotel Prins Hamlet (Hotel Prince Hamlet) got an idea. They wanted to create a luxurious hotel built in funkis-style, the prevalent style of the time.
Then came the second world war and put an end to the grand plans. Instead a more humble hotel was put up in the 1950s by the hotel king of the time, Oscar Petersen. In spite of the absence of funkis-style the hotel, along with the hotel Kystens Perle (Pearl of the coast) in Snekkersten, became a cornerstone in what would be known as ”Nordens festlige hjørne” (The festive corner of the north).
The party ended after a few years, and in 1972 the hotel was transformed into Elsinore municipality’s first activity and day centre.
